Frequently Asked Questions - FS5000 Jitterlyzer Q. What software is included with the FS5000 Jitterlyzer? A. A PC-based Tool Manager software program controls the tool via a USB connection. The Tool Manager allows the user to adjust various attributes of the injected jitter, including amplitude and frequency, and select which measurements to view, including a BER (bathtub) display or eye. Q. How does the Jitterlyzer connect to my system? A. There are several different methods. Probably the simplest is using the FS1054 Connectorless Cable. Also available are four different types of PCI Express interposers that allow you to view real bus traffic between the motherboard and an adapter card under test. Q. Can I hook my scope to the Jitterlyzer? A. Yes. There is a SMA connector called Jitter Out. You can connect your scope to this connector and see the jitter you have injected into your system under test. Q. Does the Jitterlyzer connect to my logic analyzer? A. Not directly. The Jitterlyzer connects to an interposer plugged between your motherboard and an adapter card under test. The interposer incorporates a standard PCI Express midbus footprint, to which any PCI Express analyzer may be connected. This includes the FS4400 or FS4405 PCI Express Analysis Probes from FuturePlus. Q. How does the Jitterlyzer get its power? A. All necessary power is supplied by an external supply which is included with the FS5000. Q. Does the Jitterlyzer show bathtub (bit error rate) displays? A.Yes. Q. What patterns can it generate? Can it do PRBS 10? 23? A. The Jitterlyzer can do the following patterns : Q. What does the LED on the FS5000 signify? A. The Ready LED indicates that the FS5000 is ready to inject jitter and make a measurement. Q. Do I have to obtain a password to operate the Tool Manager software? A. Tool Manager license is included with the Jitterlyzer, but it does not require a password to activate it. Q. Can I look at a trace that has been acquired previously? A. Yes. This uses the Tool Manager Offline Analysis mode, which does not require the FS5000 hardware. Q. I Want to take out the jitter and do real-time analysis on jitter. Is this possible? A. Yes. If you test run the Jitterlyzer software, you will see the features of RJ and DJ separation and jitter histogram per lane. Note you will need V. 8.2 or higher of National Instruments LabView installed. Q. Can I do 8 lanes? A. Contact FuturePlus for more information. Q. How can I characterize receive sensitivity in lookback mode? A. The Jitterlyzer does not provide a loopback function per se. It is designed to sit between two devices and they can be doing loopback. In this case the Jitterlyzer can inject jitter onto the pattern that is being loopbacked and the user can determine by looking at the devices if it is failing or passing. For receiver sensitivity, the Jitterlyzer does not extrapolate what the target will receive like some scopes do. The Jitterlyzer incorporates a fully functional high speed serial receiver, and it places the observation point for the jitter measurement right inside the receiver. As such a measurement, such as an eye diagram, includes all the jitter effects such as random, deterministic, etc. This represents the most relevant jitter measurement on multiple active lanes in the industry. This enables engineers to evaluate the BER performance of the whole serial link with real bus traffic OR if the user has the link in loopback mode with compliance patterns. An eye opening measurement represents a direct evaluation of the amount of margin the sampling instance of the receiving flip flop sees. No modeling effort is required. With the Jitterlyzer BER can be correlated to system events such as protocol failures. Have a question you don't see answered? Contact Technical Support for a prompt answer. |
