Frequently Asked Questions - FS2010

This page provides answers on some of the more common questions we receive regarding our PCI-X Analysis probes.

Q. You have an active probe and a passive probe. Which one should I buy?

A. This is one of those questions that is best answered "it depends." Both products have advantages. The passive probe is an interposer, so it can reside in the 133 MHz slot and you can still plug your card into the extender connector on the top. It does not have active circuitry, so you can do simultaneous state and timing analysis.

The FS2105 active probe requires a dedicated slot. However, because of the extensive active circuitry, it is a much more powerful protocol violation analysis product. It also has an optional stimulus capability.

Many people purchase both so they can have the advantages of both products.

Q. I am using a PCI-X bus that doesn't have a standard connector on it. How can I debug this bus?

A. FuturePlus Systems provides software only versions of our FS2010 PCI-X analysis probe. The FS1104 and FS1111 require that you incorporate standard connectors to your target system and use the High Density Termination Adapter to connector the logic analyzer. User instructions are available by clicking here. The FS1104 is used with the 16700 series logic analyzers while the FS1111 is used with the 1680, 1690 and 16900 series of logic analyzers.

Q. I would like to purchase a product that will work on both a PCI-X bus and the older PCI bus. It that available?

A. The FS2010 PCI-X analysis probe includes software for analyzing the PCI-X bus. This software will not work on the older PCI bus as the protocol is different. We suggest you order the FS1103 64-bit, PCI Software for 16700 and 16702 logic analyzers or the FS1110 64-bit, PCI Software for 16900, 16902, and 16903 logic analyzers. Also available are the FS1105 PCI Transactor and Compliance Verification Software for 16700 only and the FS1106 PCI Transactor and Performance Verification Software for 16700 only.

Q. Is there a new version of PCI-X Analysis Probe Software available?

A. FuturePlus Systems is pleased to provide free upgrades of the latest PCI-X software to all PCI-X Analysis Probe customers. Go to the Technical Support area to see the latest version numbers; you may request a free update there.

Q. Why is the FS2010 not supported by the 1670-series logic analyzers?

A. The FS2010 PCI-X analysis probe software was written in a newer language than the 1670 uses. We did not go back and write it for the 1670-series. If this is an issue for you please let us know.
